Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

Dr. Lepore stresses that liposuction is not intended to be a weight loss procedure and is therefore not a good match for people who are significantly overweight. Instead, good candidates for liposuction are healthy adults who are bothered by localized fat deposits that are resistant to good diet and exercise habits. Liposuction is often performed on the abdomen, thighs, and hips, but it can also be performed on more targeted areas such as the neck and knees. If you are a healthy adult with stubborn pockets of fat, you may be a good candidate.

What types of liposuction does Dr. Lepore perform?

Dr. Lepore offers several different liposuction enhancements to suit a variety of patients:

  • Tumescent liposuction involves the addition of tumescent fluid to the targeted fat. The fluid causes the fat to swell, making it easier to remove.
  • VASER Lipo® uses ultrasonic waves to break up targeted fat before removal for a more even result and less trauma to surrounding tissues.
  • Smartlipo™ uses a laser to melt fat prior to removal, which eases the extraction process. There is some evidence that laser-assisted liposuction also tightens nearby skin for a smooth, taut contour.

How is abdominal liposuction different from a tummy tuck?

While both procedures can reduce the amount of abdominal fat, tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, is a more comprehensive approach that also removes excess skin and repairs loose or weakened muscles. For this reason, tummy tuck surgery is especially popular with women whose bodies have changed as the result of pregnancy. Liposuction, while an effective choice for many, only targets unwanted fat.

Does liposuction permanently remove fat?

In adults, weight gain is caused by the expansion of fat cells, not the addition of new ones. Therefore, the fat removed during liposuction will not return. However, the remaining fat cells can still become larger and cause weight gain. It's important to maintain healthy diet and exercise habits even after liposuction. By maintaining a steady weight, patients can enjoy their results for years.

Can liposuction be added to other procedures?

Yes. Liposuction is routinely used to enhance the results of procedures such as:

Liposuction is a part of the Brazilian butt lift procedure and is used for fat transfer treatments. It is also often performed in conjunction with breast enhancement and tummy tuck surgery as part of a combination procedure called a Mommy Makeover. If you'd like to undergo more than one cosmetic plastic surgery procedure at our San Jose practice, Dr. Lepore works closely with you to develop a surgical plan to fit your needs.

Will I be left with loose skin after liposuction?

Skin is extremely resilient, and liposuction typically does not remove a large enough volume of fat to cause excessive loose skin. For patients who require both fat and skin removal, a more comprehensive surgery may be a better option. During your consultation, Dr. Lepore evaluates the areas you'd like to address and makes a recommendation based on your anatomy and desired outcome.

How much does liposuction cost?

The cost of liposuction is highly dependent on the type of procedure performed as well as the area involved. Dr. Lepore's prices are competitive with those of other board-certified plastic surgeons in the San Jose metro area. During the consultation, Dr. Lepore provides each of his San Jose-area liposuction patients with a written quote that reflects his personalized surgical plan.
