Understanding Breast Reduction Surgery

Overdeveloped breasts can cause a variety of health problems including pain and discomfort in the neck, back and shoulders; skin rashes beneath the breasts; and painful indentations from bra straps. Women with large breasts often express frustration that they cannot engage in physical activity as much as they would like and may feel embarrassed by the unwelcome attention that they receive.

Breast reduction surgery removes excess fat, tissue and skin. Dr. Bates and Dr. Maser often combine breast reduction with liposuction to achieve optimal results and  as part of the reduction to improve breast shape and position.

What to Expect

In San Jose, your breast reduction will be performed as an outpatient procedure with either sedation or general anesthesia. There are several incisions that can be made: a circular incision around the areola, a keyhole or “lollipop” incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease, or an anchor-shaped incision. Through the incision, Dr. Bates or Dr. Maser will remove excess tissue and skin to reshape the breast. Most often, the nipple remains tethered to its original blood and nerve supply and is repositioned; however, on occasion, the nipple may need to be removed and transplanted to a new position. The areola can also be reduced if necessary.

After your surgery, you will be bandaged and instructed to wear a special bra to reduce swelling and maintain your new shape. You will probably be able to return to your regular routine in about a week. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks after surgery and may resume at your surgeon’s suggestion.
