Eyelid Surgery

Your eyes can seem brighter and your overall appearance can seem younger with blepharoplasty, often called eyelid surgery. Our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Steven J. Bates and Dr. Benjamin Maser, perform eyelid surgery in San Jose on both the upper and lower lids to help women and men look refreshed and more youthful. The area around your eyes is important both in the way that others see you and for your vision, so it’s essential to choose a surgeon with advanced training and precise skill.

Eyelid Lift- Facial Rejuvenation

Sometimes, pictures do tell the story. This woman, in her early 60s, had severely drooping and hanging eyelids, and a dramatic surgical result. Understanding Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Bates and Dr. Maser perform blepharoplasty to correct several conditions:

  • Excess skin that folds over the upper eyelid, potentially impacting vision
  • Excess fat deposits that cause the eyes to look puffy
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Sagging lower lids
  • Wrinkles on the lower eyelids

While eyelid surgery can be performed on its own, it also makes a great complement to other facial rejuvenation procedures, especially facelift and brow lift surgeries. During your consultation with Dr. Maser or Dr. Bates, we will discuss your aesthetic goals at length. Depending on your existing anatomy and desired outcome, you may decide to undergo more than one procedure at once for a substantial, natural-looking result.

What To Expect

Depending on the specifics of your procedure, you may be under general anesthesia or simply local anesthesia with sedation for your blepharoplasty. Dr. Bates or Dr. Maser will discuss their recommendation for anesthesia with you during your consultation and preoperative appointments. Once you are completely anesthetized, your surgeon carefully makes incisions to minimize the visibility of future scars. If your upper eyelid is being treated, he makes an incision in the upper eyelid crease to remove excess fat and skin and tighten muscles and tissue. If your lower eyelid is being treated, your surgeon makes an incision below the line of your lower eyelashes or inside your lower eyelid to remove excess fat and skin.

At our office, many patients choose to combine eyelid surgery with a chemical peel to reduce discoloration of the skin below their eyes.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, and you’ll be able to return home shortly after surgery with the help of a trusted friend or loved one. Your companion will need to stay with you for several hours after surgery to help you around the house.

For the first few days after your eyelid surgery, Dr. Bates or Dr. Maser may instruct you to use medicated ointment on your incisions or to keep your eyes bandaged. Although some soreness is normal, it’s typically easily manageable with prescribed medication. After about 1 week, your surgeon removes your sutures, and you should be able to get a better sense of your ultimate result. Most patients can return to work at this point, covering any residual bruising or discoloration with makeup. If you wear contact lenses, you may still need to wear glasses during this time. Over the next several weeks, your results will become more pronounced and you’ll see your beautiful, refreshed eyelids.

Your New Look

After your swelling and bruising have subsided, you’ll notice smoother skin and a “cleaner”-looking eye appearance. Many patients feel that they look remarkably younger and more alert, earning them compliments from friends and family as well as a newfound sense of confidence.
