What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess fat by suctioning it out through a long, thin tube called a cannula. It is ideal for fine-tuning contours, but it is not a weight-loss procedure.

Liposuction Candidates

Healthy adults at or near their target weight and bothered by localized fat deposits that resist good diet and exercise habits should be good candidates for lipo. Dr. Bates and Dr. Maser can perform liposuction on most areas, which commonly include:

  • Double chin
  • Belly
  • Upper back
  • Waist
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Inner and outer thighs

If you are significantly overweight, liposuction might not be appropriate for you. To find out what your options are, we welcome you to schedule a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons.

How Is Tumescent Liposuction Done?

Dr. Maser and Dr. Bates perform liposuction using either IV sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the specifics of your surgery. Your surgeon will prepare the treatment area by injecting it with a large volume of tumescent fluid, which contains saline, anesthesia, and adrenaline. It numbs the treatment area and minimizes bruising and bleeding.

Once the fluid has taken effect, Dr. Bates or Dr. Maser creates a tiny incision near the area of unwanted fat and inserts a long, thin tube called a cannula. He moves the cannula in and out to loosen and break up the fat as it is suctioned away. Multiple incisions are needed to treat most areas. They typically do not need to be stitched closed and will heal on their own.

Optimizing Your Liposuction Results

Dr. Maser and Dr. Bates offer tumescent liposuction as an individual procedure or along with a liposuction enhancement such as VASER to make fat removal easier. During the consultation, they discuss the procedure and conduct a complete physical examination to determine which method would be optimal. In certain instances, our surgeons may use a combination of both technologies to enhance results even further.

VASER liposuction involves a blunt-tipped probe that emits ultrasonic energy to rupture and loosen fat cells, making them easier to remove. As with tumescent liposuction, the fat is then suctioned away with a thin, metal tube called a cannula. This method minimizes damage to the surrounding tissues, and fewer nerves and blood cells are disturbed than during tumescent liposuction on its own. Recovery is faster and more comfortable.

Is It Better to Get Lipo or a Tummy Tuck?

While both procedures can reduce the amount of abdominal fat, tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, is a more comprehensive approach that also removes excess skin and repairs loose or weakened muscles. For this reason, tummy tuck surgery is especially popular with women whose bodies have changed as a result of pregnancy. Liposuction, while an effective choice in many cases, only targets unwanted fat.

Renuvion® Skin Tightening After Liposuction

Patients with mild to moderate skin laxity or poor skin elasticity in general often benefit from combining liposuction with Renuvion minimally invasive skin tightening. After removing the fat, Dr. Bates or Dr. Maser performs the Renuvion procedure by inserting the probe into the tiny liposuction incisions.

The energy released encourages the production of collagen over time, which tightens the connective tissues between the skin and the fascia that covers the muscle. The result is smoother, slimmer contours without surgical skin removal. Learn more in this blog post.

Can Liposuction Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes. Liposuction is routinely used to enhance the results of a variety of plastic surgery procedures, including:

Liposuction is also part of the fat transfer procedure, which our surgeons perform to add volume to the face, hands, buttocks, or breasts. If you’d like to undergo more than one cosmetic plastic surgery procedure at our San Jose practice, Dr. Bates and Dr. Maser will work closely with you to develop a surgical plan to fit your needs.

Liposuction Recovery

The liposuction methods we offer require very little downtime and should cause only minimal discomfort. Some swelling or bruising is normal. You should be able to return to your normal activities in less than a week.

Your Liposuction Results

With proper care and vigilance, your new, smoothly contoured physique will be built to last. Once fat cells are removed through liposuction, they will not grow back. It is important to continue your healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly and eating well to maintain your results.

Liposuction FAQ

How much does liposuction cost in San Jose, CA?

The cost of liposuction in the Bay Area, as with all cosmetic plastic surgery, depends on a range of factors. These include the extent of the procedure itself and whether you want to combine it with other treatments. Dr. Maser and Dr. Bates are committed to making cosmetic surgery accessible to as many patients as possible and offer financing plans for qualified individuals.

How much weight can I lose with liposuction?

Although a tummy tuck does contour the body and remove small amounts of fat, it is not a weight loss surgery. Our board-certified plastic surgeons are happy to meet with patients who are interested in losing weight and finishing off their transformations with liposuction, a tummy tuck, or another procedure.

What is an alternative to liposuction?

With the increasing number of nonsurgical body contouring procedures, it’s important to understand when liposuction is the best approach. Although it’s more invasive, liposuction offers benefits not available from nonsurgical fat reduction treatments. Liposuction produces immediate results and removes more fat than nonsurgical alternatives.

Will I be left with loose skin after liposuction?

Skin is extremely resilient, and liposuction typically does not remove a large enough volume of fat to cause excessive loose skin. For patients who require both fat and skin removal, a more comprehensive surgery may be a better option. During your consultation, Dr. Bates or Dr. Maser will evaluate the areas you’d like to address and make a recommendation based on your anatomy and desired outcome.
