Surgeon: Vincent D. Lepore, MD
This is one of many women who have come to Dr. Vincent Lepore for Breast Reconstruction surgery. For more than two decades, Breast Reconstruction has been a hallmark of Dr. Lepore's practice. There are many surgical options for women (and men) facing the loss of their breasts due to cancer.
Patients may choose reconstruction with implants and tissue expanders, or, through microvascular surgery such as TRAM or DIEP flap procedures, in which the patient's own tissue is taken from another part of the body to fashion a breast.
In the case of this patient, both breasts were removed, in what is known as a nipple-sparing mastectomy. (As much as possible, the patient's skin and nipples are preserved.) For her Reconstruction, she chose to have saline implants. The surgery was performed in one stage. As soon as the mastectomy was completed, Dr. Lepore inserted reconstructive saline implants beneath the pectoral muscles. In this instance, Acellular Dermal Matrix was used on the lower pole of the breasts.
(Acellular Dermal Matrix is the name of a product made up of cadaver skin which has been processed to remove cellular elements, while preserving protein. The resulting substance is incorporated by the patient's own skin as it heals. The graft allows for better coverage of the implant, and better protection of the overlying skin.)
Within a few weeks of her surgery, this patient was able to resume her normal activities, She is very pleased with the results of her breast reconstruction.
