How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost in the Bay Area?

At Reveal Plastic Surgery, each procedure is priced based on the unique needs of the patient, so there are no set price tags for rhinoplasty. Dr. Maser and Dr. Bates make fair, transparent pricing a priority and ensure their prices are competitive with those of other highly qualified plastic surgeons. Your surgeon provides you with a personalized, written quote during your consultation.

Rhinoplasty Candidates

Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job or nose surgery, is appropriate for healthy adults of all ages, as well as teens, as long as their facial growth is complete and their expectations are realistic. Each patient has their own personal reasons for choosing this procedure, which often include:

  • Reducing or increasing the size of the nose and/or nostrils
  • Removing a bump from the bridge of the nose
  • Straightening a crooked nose
  • Correcting breathing obstructions caused by injury or birth defects, such as a deviated septum
  • Complementing other facial cosmetic surgery procedures, such as eyelid surgery or a facelift

During a private consultation with Dr. Bates or Dr. Maser, you will have the opportunity to discuss your cosmetic goals, express your concerns, and ask questions. Your surgeon will then propose a unique treatment plan that will most closely provide the desired improvements.

What’s a Liquid Rhinoplasty?

Liquid rhinoplasty, also called a nonsurgical nose job, is a procedure that uses dermal filler injections to make slight enhancements to the nose, such as smoothing out the bridge or sculpting the tip. This treatment cannot change the size of the nose or nostrils. Results are instant and no downtime is needed. Patients typically need maintenance treatments after about 6 to 18 months because improvements are temporary.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Dr. Maser and Dr. Bates perform rhinoplasty as an outpatient procedure while you are sedated or under general anesthesia. The surgery is usually completed in approximately 1 to 2 hours.

When performing rhinoplasty, our surgeons use one of two approaches:

Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions within the nostrils. Once healed, they do not create any visible scars.

Open rhinoplasty involves an incision down the columella, the strip of flesh that divides the nostrils. This approach gives the surgeon clear access to the interior structures of the nose, allowing for more dramatic improvement. Although open rhinoplasty does create an external scar, its discreet placement and small size make it practically invisible once healed.

After making the initial incision, your surgeon separates the soft tissues of the nose from the underlying structures and reshapes the cartilage and bone, sometimes using an implant. Dr. Bates or Dr. Maser can also build up the nose using cartilage from the nose or another area of the body. After completing the procedure, your surgeon uses a temporary splint to maintain and support the new shape of the nose for approximately 5 to 7 days.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

You will need to have someone drive you home the day of your procedure and have them help you out for a few days afterward. Initially, you should restrict your activities and sleep with your head elevated to minimize swelling and bruising around your eyes. Patients are usually able to return to work about 7 days after surgery, although swelling and bruising may last for 4 to 6 weeks. Most patients are ready to resume strenuous exercise after about a month.

Is There Anything I Can Do at Home To Improve My Results?

The best way to ensure you get the best results from your surgery is to follow your surgeon’s instructions closely. Prior to surgery, Dr. Maser or Dr. Bates will likely recommend discontinuing the use of certain medications and supplements, as well as abstaining from smoking and alcohol. These steps reduce risks during surgery and improve healing.

After surgery, applying a cold compress to the areas around your nose, including your cheeks and eyes, can help minimize bruising. It’s also a good idea to ask a trusted friend or family member for help during the first couple of days after surgery. Although you’ll be mobile, you may not feel up to housework or other daily activities.

Your New Look

After recovery is complete, the majority of our rhinoplasty patients are thrilled with their more balanced facial appearance. It’s surprising what a difference just improving this one facial feature can make. Both women and men can gain confidence and self-esteem from their improved look.

Rhinoplasty FAQ

Does rhinoplasty hurt?

Many patients are pleasantly surprised to learn that recuperation following rhinoplasty isn’t as painful as they imagined it would be. Of course, some discomfort is to be expected, but it’s typically managed well with prescribed pain medications. Abiding by your surgeon’s instructions, such as keeping your head upright to minimize swelling, can also go a long way toward controlling discomfort. Many patients begin to feel better in a couple of days, although mild headaches and a congested sensation may persist a bit longer. Most of our rhinoplasty patients are back to work and school in about a week.

Is rhinoplasty covered by insurance?

The answer to this question varies widely based on the type of coverage you have. In many cases, the surgery is covered, at least partially, if it’s performed to improve the function of the nose or to repair it after trauma. Rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons is not typically covered. Our team can help you check with your provider. For procedures that aren’t covered by insurance, we are happy to assist you with financing.

How is an Asian rhinoplasty different?

Dr. Bates and Dr. Maser perform Asian rhinoplasty to achieve a characteristically Asian nose that fits with the other facial features for a more attractive appearance. This procedure is typically more challenging than traditional rhinoplasty.

Is nose surgery approached differently for men and women?

Yes. Male noses are generally larger than female noses; it’s important to avoid reducing the nose too much, even when refining its size and/or shape. Our board-certified plastic surgeons preserve the patient’s masculinity while making the nose fit better with the rest of the face.

I’ve heard that it can take months for rhinoplasty results to develop. Is that true?

Although this is technically true, it doesn’t mean your nose will be bandaged or bruised for the entire duration. The nose is an extremely complex feature, and depending on the specifics of your surgery, it can take some time for the bones and cartilage to settle into their final positions. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this process isn’t conspicuous.

After your surgical dressings are removed, you’ll notice a distinct improvement in the appearance of your nose. All bruising and the vast majority of swelling will be gone after 2 or 3 weeks. Over the next few months, your nose’s size or shape may continue to change as healing goes on. This process doesn’t hurt, and it’s very gradual—so it’s likely that no one will notice.

How long will my new nose retain its shape?

The structures of the nose aren’t as susceptible to weight fluctuations or aging as many other parts of the body are, so the results of rhinoplasty are typically quite long-lasting and can even be permanent. Practicing good skincare habits and protecting your nose from the sun can maintain the integrity of the skin on your nose to ensure that it beautifully complements your improved structure for many years.
