Understanding Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, also called nose surgery, is appropriate for healthy adults of all ages, as well as teens, as long as their facial growth is complete and their expectations are realistic. Each patient has their own personal reasons for choosing this procedure, which often include:
- Reducing or increasing the size of the nose and/or nostrils
- Removing a bump from the bridge of the nose
- Straightening a crooked nose
- Correcting breathing obstructions caused by injury or birth defects, such as a deviated septum
- Complementing other facial cosmetic surgery procedures, such as eyelid surgery or a face lift in San Jose
During their private consultation, Dr. Lepore gives his patients the opportunity to discuss their cosmetic goals, express their concerns, and ask questions. He will then propose a unique treatment plan that will most closely provide the desired improvements.
What to Expect
Dr. Lepore performs rhinoplasty as an outpatient procedure while the patient is sedated or under general anesthesia. The surgery is usually completed in approximately 1 to 2 hours. You will need to have someone drive you home the day of your procedure and have them help you out for a few days afterwards.
When performing rhinoplasty, Dr. Lepore conceals the incisions inside the nostrils or along the strip of skin that separates the nostrils. After making the initial incision, he separates the soft tissues of the nose from the underlying structures and reshapes the cartilage and bone, sometimes using an implant. He can also build up the nose using cartilage from the nose or another area of the body. After he completes the procedure, Dr. Lepore uses a temporary splint to maintain and support the new shape for approximately 5 to 7 days.
Initially, you should restrict your activities and sleep with your head elevated to minimize swelling and bruising around your eyes. You will usually be able to return to work about 7 days after surgery, although swelling and bruising may last for 4 to 6 weeks. Most patients are ready to resume strenuous exercise after about a month.
